CONVERSATIONS FROM STORYEXPE RESIDENTS:

ENTER THE OFFICIAL STORYEXPE LITERATURE & BOOKS COMMUNITY

(only for Storyexpe Residents)

When you read a book, you dont' just "consume" content. You give words and concepts in your mind the power to form completely new thoughts and ideas. And to understand better new ones.

What is the best place for you to write?

Yes, there is the romantic idea of the writer who writes by candlelight in an old library of a Victorian building. But maybe not all writers live in a Victorian building or have access to a mysterious library.

The night is magic… for writers.

I know that the idea of writing at night may be romantic, though often incompatible with a normal routine. But there is something magical about sharing your thoughts with ghosts while no other humans are around.

Why I love writing: it demands its time. It gives depth to any thought. It confers elegance to words. Writing makes a conversation timeless, and it is able to explore the soul in ways that would otherwise remain undiscovered.

Maybe the most beautiful aspect of being a writer is that you create a reality, and each of your readers will interpret individual aspects of it. When talking to readers, a writer will explore an incredibly multifaceted kaleidoscope of his original idea.

Poets vs. sadness

We all experience sad days. But a poet will instill a small yet beautiful thought within the sadness itself. And, like a pearl, that thought will one day evolve into a sweet nostalgia.

As a writer, I must admit that writing can be really personal. The poet Dante, while writing the „Divine Comedy" has placed people in the hell of whom he believed they belonged exactly there. People who were still alive at that time. And who read that they were in hell. Some actually believed it, and were afraid of it. I assume that they have started to seriously question their lifestyle.

Those who read little will barely be able to understand their own reality. Those who read a lot will not only be able to understand it much better, but will also be able to imagine alternatives, and pursue the most attractive one.

„I spent the morning putting in a comma and the afternoon taking it out".
(This quote is commonly, not unequivocally attributed to Voltaire.)

Yes, sometimes writing is exactly like this.

From an idea I derive the story for a book. From a nostalgia I derive a poem. Over time I have found that it is useless to try to lock it into a plot. A deep nostalgia needs words that can blossom in each reader's mind.

Good reasons to start writing a new book:

• Take readers in a world that you have created.
• Take yourself in a world you are creating, to see how you evolve.
• Share with a community the topics you are most passionate about.

The most effective approach to writing a book? Let your 15-year-old self write the first draft. The enthusiasm I had at that age for immediately drafting a new idea, without distractions, has remained unmatched.

As a beginner writer, should you fake it until you make it? No. If you like to write, you are driven by a purpose. Ideas with which you want to shape worlds. Characters you want to bring to life. Concepts you need to express. You will find your own way.

Is reading nonfiction really better for your mind than fiction?

No. Fiction allows you to expand your vocabulary. It makes you experience emotions. It makes you actively participate in a plot, and leaves lasting impressions. Sometimes eternal.

Every book is a gate towards a different reality. As a writer, you have to consider that every reader will follow an individual path along the story, according to their own expectations and personality.

Prose or poetry?

If you write a book, you take readers by the hand and lead them into your reality. With a poem, you capture a particular moment, donate it to the readers, and find the words to make it completely their own.

Writing tip: as a writer, there is one thing you should learn to value as much as words: silence. Not only does it fill the space between the words your protagonists speak, but it can also characterize that space with an unthinkable intensity. Sometimes, readers will imagine in silence more than they will grasp in words.

I realized that being a writer was what I wanted to do in life, when one day I picked up for the first time after years the first book I had written as a kid (and that I had forgotten). The feeling of rediscovering the world I had created filled me with a deep sense of nostalgia.

Writing tip: if you don't know how to proceed with your writing (or don't know how to start): don’t approach your book as a writer, but as a reader. Don't start with your certainties, knowledge and skills. Start with your questions and the desire to explore.

Simple writing advice that really works: write the book you yourself would like to read. Why? Because sometimes our ambitions lead us astray.

What keeps you mostly from writing?

• The lack of a solid writing routine.
• The lack of time in general.
• Losing inspiration along the way.

The most effective way to start writing a new book?

• A sudden idea so disruptive and fascinating, that you want to begin directly.
• A clearly structured project that allows you to do the work in a linear, planned way.
• In your niche you have the proper expertise to write it.

The most valuable books are not always those that offer the best answers. Sometimes, the most valuable books are the ones that unlock your truest answers within your mind. Ideally, these two qualities coincide.

The most useful book to read in your life:

• The one that will change completely your beliefs.

• The one capable of giving you new perspectives.

• The one that gives you the opportunity to explore yourself.

• The one that takes you on a journey, and every time you read this book again, you draw new reflections from it.

"Still today, our tragedy is a source of inspiration and passion for those who follow the path of the verses up to the crypt of Capulet".

"For each reader the tragedy terminates at the crypt, while to our wishes is renewed the eternal ardor of the promise ahead of the balcony, that no verse will ever poison".
